FEAST- The Count's Den, DTLA

Review by Amalisha HuEck

After the challenge of finding 'The Count's Den," a hidden space in downtown Los Angeles, with an enchanting and mysterious atmosphere. As soon as you walk through the door, you are transformed into some different time and space, and you wonder what your experiences will be here.

You are then taken into the theatre space, which is in a restaurant setting and stationed at your dinner table where a tastefully set up feast is already waiting for you. A romantic candle lights, pretty little plates and the play's program as the menu with a QR code. Deep red walls are covered with beautiful classic frames, some with paintings and others empty. Wine is served and the FEAST by Megan Gogerty begins.

Our host ERIN SCHLABACH through physicality, sexual overtones and original movements, takes us with her solo performance on a long temperamental journey where mythology and the character's personal life merge, and the impact of losing her son is deeply explored. We see a woman whose struggles take her through Gogerty's imaginative poetry to enjoy life, and to find a comfort in the possibility of departing from this plane of existence. With her strong choices and firm, calculated moves she displays the cry for justice and finds subjectivity in historical events. Schlabach is strong in her choices and stays true to them throughout the play.

Director Laura Covelli, in focusing on the voiceless sides of history notes, 'History is set down by the winners, and this concept is what excited me about FEAST. The play shows us why the voices of the voiceless MUST be heard after thousands of years; and the epic poem 'Beowulf', when held up as an example of every incident of imperialism throughout all time suggests there is always a side we have not been allowed to know.' Under her great direction, the success is achieved.

Executive Producer Jolie Kobrinsky with Producers Erin Schlabach and Laura Covell bring the Leonix Movement Theatre in association with Immersive Art Collective to the West Coast premiere of Feast and manages to align it with the current events in our history today. The key is to always pay attention to 'Who is telling the history '.

The rest of the TEAM are Meredith Hunt (Creative Consultant), Niki Armato (Production Manager and Lighting and Sound Design), Rachel Adams (Prop Designer). The waiters are Rachel Adams and Erika Jenko, and publicity is covered by Susan Gordon.

Feast is extraordinary and truly unique, an unforgettable theatre adventure in all sincerity well worth experiencing.

Feast can be found at the home of The Count's Den, 1039 South Olive St., in downtown LA, on Saturdays at 7 pm and Sundays at 5 pm thru April 6.

Running time is approximately 75 minutes with no intermission. To find more about the FEAST and to buy tickets go to: https://www.leonixtheatre.org/
